Esperanza x Lauryn

September 9, 2010

If you don’t know Esperanza Spalding, google her.  NOW.  She’s a ridiculously talented jazz/soul singer and instrumentalist making a pretty big splash.  Prince hand picked her to perform his classic “If I Was Your Girlfriend” on the 2010 BET Awards.  She is an accomplished musician who can beast on the upright bass.  She received a full scholarship to the Berklee College of Music after getting her high school diploma at 16.  She became the youngest professor at Berklee, at the age of 20.  She has since released three albums, with one being the widely acclaimed Esperanza and the other being the newly released Chamber Music Society.

Invited to perform at the White House’s Evening of Poetry, Music, and the Spoken Word back in 2009, she made a gutsy move and tackled a widely love track.  She decided to do the Lauryn Hill track “Tell Him” at the event and she delivered a stunning rendition.  I’m sad that I am just now finding this.  Enjoy it below and after the jump check out my favorite song by Esperanza (one I share with my best friend, Lacey) called “I Know You Know.”
