A Coldplay Christmas

December 2, 2010

Joining a host of other Christmas songs focused around love lost (Mariah’s “Miss You Most (At Christmas),” Wham!’s “Last Christmas,” The Emotions’ “What Do the Lonely Do at Christmas?”), Coldplay dropped a similarly themed holiday tune called “Christmas Lights” and yesterday saw the premiere of the accompanying video.  The song, even though heavily Christmas-y in content, still has that signature Coldplay ache sprinkled with a little hope.  The song has a creeping build, thanks in part to Chris Martin’s wavy vocals, with a soaring climax that has made Coldplay’s music so identifiable and a soft, meek conclusion that leaves just enough of a haunting appreciation for all the amazingness that had just been consumed…sort of like the holiday season.

Holiday music can and should echo the same messages that songs carry outside of the festive season.  It’s always great to hear anything new from Coldplay but it’s even better when they do so while bringing a certain digestible realism back to the grandeur of the winter holidays.
